Benjamin Rimmer (b. 1993) is a composer based in London.
Benjamin studied composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2016.
He has most recently composed the score for a new ballet, Sandmann, which was premiered in October last year (2018) at Oper Graz and choreographed by Andreas Heise. Eveline koberg of Tanz.at described Benjamin’s score as a “finely tuned network of thoughts and feelings that enhanced and supported the expression of the production; it is equally melodic and dreamily romantic as well as it is hard, alienating, and even frightening through soundscapes of unfamiliar tone sequences.”
Previous commissions include those from Classic FM and the Royal Philharmonic Society, Ballett Im Revier Gelsenkirchen, and acclaimed harpist Eleanor Turner.
His work of late has been performed by ensembles such as The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, The Elias Quartet, and Jugendkonzertchor Der Chorakademie Dortmund. In 2017, his vocal work In The Shining Blackness was premiered by the critically acclaimed Kingfisher Chorale in Leicester.
In 2014 he was shortlisted for the Britten Sinfonia’s OPUS 2015 award and, in 2015, was one of the ten winning composers of the Oticons International Film Music Competition.
Benjamin also enjoys composing music for film. Most recently he composed the music for Romy, a short by director Ornella Hawthorn Gardez. His film music has also been performed live to picture at The Barbican’s Silent Film & Live Music series and, in 2016, to a screening of Albert Lamorisse’s Le Ballon Rouge at Milton Court Concert Hall. The latter was a collaborative re-scoring of the French classic.
Benjamin also works as an arranger. Most recently this has involved arranging the strings for Melisa Whiskey’s EP Moon + Sky. Previous work includes arranging additional strings in collaboration with Grammy-nominated songwriter Jonny Coffer for the single Threshold by Redlight
